Resistance – Avoiding the Path I know I should follow

I know exactly what I need to do. I have a Plan of Action. I have a Goal in mind and I can visualize the outcome. I know what I need to do and why. I am all psyched up about it.

Then I get distracted with helping my friend with a move, with overtime work, with cleaning up my garden, with researching a new project I found out about through facebook… So I never get around to my Goal.

Does that sound familiar?

Okay, the story is not entirely me, I got a bit creative, but my life does get close enough to that sometimes.

It’s called Avoidance.

Avoidance is a form of Resistance to the change I know I want and need to make in my life.

Doing all kinds of other things, non-important in terms of my Goal achievement, getting distracted by anything and everything, allows me to avoid what should really matter to me. If my Goal will bring me to a happier place in my life, it should hold priority order number ONE. Yet I find other projects to take its spot in my life, pushing it behind. This allows me to forget about it for some time.

I am avoiding my project as a form of resistance to the new life that the changes would be expected to bring. Even though I know what I need to do and why it is so important to me, I can have an inner Fear of the unfamiliar, of the unknown and the novelty to come from the changes in my life, even if they should be for the better. I can also Fear possible challenges and adversity that may come from these changes. No matter the cause, the avoidance is a way to stall on the projects and prevents me moving forward on my Path.

Identifying the cause(s) is already a HUGE step into dealing with it. I need to work out the issues, understand them and try to minimize their impact in order to start taking Baby Steps into Goal achievement.

Journal Writing is a great way to identify feelings. My regular readers know how much I push Journal Writing as a way to bring out inner and hidden emotions. Vision Boards can also help to start writing about the Goal and feelings related to it. (See related posts for more info on Journal Writing and Vision Boards!)

And no matter what you do, how much you have been avoiding your Path and how much you are resisting the changes you know you need in your life, NEVER give up!! On your Path to Happiness, Resistance cannot resist your strength!
